Buying a Sketchbook
Recommend Binder Styles 1. Spiral Bound - has one continuous wire that spirals 2. Book Bound - pages are stitched together with a hard cover (disadvantage of book binding is that the book doesn't lay flat when open,). 3 AVOID - Paper & Glue and U Wire Binding - The pages fall out very easily |

Thumbnails & Test Patterns
Each project will require that you create some planning work prior to beginning the final artwork. STEP 1 -Thumbnails - Thumbnails are quick, small sketches that allow you to work out the placement of elements in your artwork. They are not detailed. Each one is different and you will use your favorite as the basis of your final design. This is also a good time to do a value study. Value studies are plans about placement of darks and lights. As you work on your projects, create thumbnail sketches in your sketchbook to plan composition, colors, focal points, etc. This will help you improve your compositional skills and produce better work. An average of 3 thumbnail sketches is a good estimate for each work. You may complete more as needed. |
