General Tips and Guidelines
There are some common things you should consider when creating a portfolio for a college or university. Usually portfolios include 10 - 20 pieces. Although most portfolios are submitted digitally, but you may need to send a few original works or bring your portfolio to the college interview. Digital entries should be high quality photographs with good lighting. 1. Research the specific requirements for the colleges or universities to which you are applying. 2. Since drawing is the basis for most art forms, be sure to include several drawings. 3. Observational drawings and paintings from real life are key and should be emphasized as the bulk of your artwork. 4. Never include work copied from another artists or someone else's photographs 5. Include a variety of styles, media, and subjects 6. Showcase your personal style and artistic passions 7. Show how you develop ideas, experimental work, and include sketchbooks that show your growth as an artist 8. Get other's opinions about the work you want to submit (Art Teachers, National Portfolio Day, etc) 9. Look at portfolio examples from other students that the university has published online 10. Go to Open Houses for schools you are interested in attending 11. If you are asked to present your work, be prepared to talk about your artistic processes and decisions.
