Essential Question How is identity exemplified in artwork? I can . . . study my cultural heritage, religious roots, personal identity, close relationships, and my place at Carson
I will . . . create a collaborative project that reflects my personal identity, and the culture here at Carson. Overview After exploring your personal identity through a series of sketchbook assignments, the class will plan and create a class artwork that is made up of individual squares painted by each student. The class will also discuss the culture and identity of Carson's community. As you work on your concepts of identity, begin collecting visual image that can be used in the final work (both for your personal identity and that of Carson). The overall design will consist of individual identity paintings that work in coordination with an over all Carson identity. Color and placement of canvas will be planned in groups and as a class.
When completed, the canvas panels will be hung on a large display board, placed in the school lobby, and shown at the spring musical. A different class spokesperson will attend each of the shows to represent and explain the artwork to those attending the play.
Sketchbook Assignments Students will create a series of sketchbook assignments as part of the planning process. These activities will help students brainstorm ideas, try out techniques, and plan composition
Class discussions Through out this process, the class will hold multiple discussions to plan the composition. These discussions are important since they will allow the finished art piece feel cohesive and unified rather than smaller panels hung side by side. Discussion themes will include the over all design and theme, the color scheme, and panel placements.
Collaborative Groups Students will work in small groups on specific design aspects, brainstorming ideas to present to the group, co-ordinating adjacent panels, and refining each others panels.
Product Students will create a body of works in their sketchbooks centered on exploring their identity. These personal art pieces will be studied then used to create one inclusive work that represents them as a whole on a deeper level. The class will join forces to plan, arrange and design a single work that includes each students finished art piece.
Real World Application Students will learn to work in groups and make connections to each other and their community in an ever increasing global world.
Audience The final work will be displayed during the spring musical. A title and an artist statement will be part of the final product.
