Tawaraya Sōtatsu Red and White Poppie 49 3/4" x 18 1/4" Edo period (17th Century)
Hanging scroll; ink and color on paper Japan Here, boldly arranged in two clumps within the narrow vertical format and rendered in the heavy mineral pigments that characterize the works of Sōtatsu and his followers, this decorative rendition of the poppies nevertheless reveals a careful attention to naturalistic detail. These characteristics are notable in the work of Sōsetsu |
Lauren Matsumoto Something Old, Something New | 2015
acrylic, ink & paper collage on canvas 36 x 36 in. "The central theme of my work is nature, the cycle of life and how we relate to it. Pivotal to our lives in a materialistic society are all the objects and paper ephemera we accumulate- all the stuff that builds up in our homes and in particular the items we treasure and then leave to our offspring when we die. I am fascinated by antique stores, where someone’s entire life ends up in a bin- old, crinkled photographs, postcards with messages scrawled on them, or other vintage ephemera. Like us, fauna and flora occupy the Earth only for a short time, yet they leave nothing behind. My work asks the question– what if we were all gone, but all our possessions remained"? |

Botanical Illustration - Create a series of drawing that depict the color, form, and details of a plant species. The drawing should be scientifically accurate, but also artistically pleasing. You may want to include the species name or details about the species as part of your composition. You can show variations of the type of plant or the stages of the plant/insects life cycle as it grows from seed to death.
|
Collage - Create an abstract collage by repeating an element from nature in various colors and species. You can use insects (like the butterfly above) leaves, flowers, etc.
|
Vignette - A vignette is a small grouping of objects that creates a pleasing focal point. In the foreground of your artwork, create a grouping of plants, insects, etc. that will act as the focal point. Add the environment that the plant would be naturally found in behind the vignette. The main grouping should be detailed and complex, but the background can be simplified.
