Upper Paleolithic Period 13,000 B.C.E.
"Lascaux is famous for its Palaeolithic cave paintings, found in a complex of caves in the Dordogne region of southwestern France, because of their exceptional quality, size, sophistication and antiquity. Estimated to be up to 20,000 years old, the paintings consist primarily of large animals, once native to the region. The cave contains nearly 2,000 figures, which can be grouped into three main categories - animals, human figures and abstract signs. Most of the major images have been painted onto the walls using mineral pigments although some designs have also been incised into the stone. Of the animals, equines predominate. There are 90 paintings of stags. Also represented are cattle, bison, felines, a bird, a bear, a rhinoceros, and a human". www.bradshawfoundation.com/lascaux/ |
Sun Drop Patricia A. Griffin
24" x 72" Oil on Linen Patricia A Griffin’s vibrant compositions are a contemporary manifestation of humanity’s earliest muse. Griffin goes to great lengths to study, photograph and sketch her kinetic subjects. She utilizes subject matter as a testing ground for concepts of color, value, and structure. The works are portals into poetic and psychological content and drift into wordless fantasy.

Endangered Species Overview
Research animals that are endangered of going extinct. Choose one and create an artwork that includes the animal in its natural environment. You may also include clues to the cause for their failure to thrive. For example, you could include fishing net, motor boat blades, or the plastic 6 pack rings which have all contributed to injury or death of sea turtles |
Hybrid Animal Overview
Combine 2 - 3 animals to create your own new species. Consider ways to integrate the texture of the skin (feathers, fur, etc.) and major parts to create a homogenous creature. Hybrid Animal Generator switchzoo.com/zoo.htm |
Collaged Animal Overview
Create a stylized drawing of your animal so that the major areas (wrinkles/folds, facial features, shadows and highlights, etc.) are sectioned off. These sections will be filled with different patterned pieces of paper. Paint different patterns on paper that can be cut and glued down on to the sections of the animal. Create enough of the paper to use it in at least 3 areas. Scrapbook printed paper, newspaper, and book pages can also be integrated as is or with some type of paint treatment. Remember to plan your colors in advanced to create unity. Finish by using Sharpie or paint to add outlines around the colored paper shapes. |
