Limited Color Palette Many artist choose to paint with just a few color rather than multiple tubes of paint. Generally, a limited palette consists of 6 colors or less not including white, black or burnt umber (which are used to create shades and tints).. There are many reasons to choose to.mix your own color variations rather than use paint directly from the tube. Some of the reasons are listed below.
Simplifies the process
Creates unity and harmony
Forces you to think about values and composition
Less expensive than buying multiple colors
More portable for painting on location
More realistic results
Improves your color mixing skills
Allows you to create moody colors
Your color choices become part of your artistic voice and help people recognize your work. There is not a right way to choose your palette and the number of colors used. This is a personal decision that develops with experience and may change over time. As you begin mixing your own colors, pay attention to the types of colors you find attractive and how you achieved that affect.
Color Temperature and Color Bias Color Bias is the term used for the tendency of a color to lean towards one of the adjoining colors on the color wheel. For example, red can be biased toward blue or biased toward yellow. Depending on which way the color leans, a color may have a warm bias or cool bias. It is important to recognize a colors bias when you mix colors. If you match a warm bias hue to a warm bias hue (for example a warm red to a warm yellow) the mixed hue will be brighter and clearer. If you mismatch a warm and cool hue, the colors are less saturated and duller.
2. The amount of each color added to the mix will change the overall color. Start with the lightest color and a small amount of the darker color to it. 3. Using a dirty brush will contaminate your color by adding previously used colors to the mix. 4. Colors become "muddy" when they are over mixed. Muddy colors lack life and are muted in an unattractive way. 5. You can change the intensity of a color by adding the complement and the value of a color by adding white or black/burnt umber.
